The Cell might look nice with amazing visuals by director Tarsem Singh and the production design team and conceptually it is an intriguing idea, but man its hard not to realize how dumb the movie is while watching. I suppose if viewing for the first time one might get lost in the effects and style, but drilling down, the substance is lacking to go along with one-dimensional characters (though Lopez for her part wasn’t terrible).

The Unwanted has some things going for it especially with its two relatively young actresses in Hannah Fierman and Christen Orr and although some work could’ve been done with the writing and in the editing room, there’s enough there that makes it worth at least a rental. The Blu-ray released by Kino Lorber is a tad weak with some basic bonus material and while the video was decent, the audio had so much to be desired.

Neither The Outing/The Lamp nor The Godsend are particularly well made movies but they do have a niche audience who might appreciate it. The Blu-ray released by Shout via their Scream Factory line is rather basic with basically no bonus material while the video and audio transfers are both OK and nothing extraordinary.

The DUFF might not achieve the same status of Mean Girls or Easy A (to name two of recent memory), but it does have a few things going for it from an amiable cast to some witty writing and dialogue as well as a charming story, syrupy conclusion and all. It was far better than what I thought it would be and perhaps it’s worth a rental if you’re on the fence.

“Rectify”: The Complete Second Season is another successful year for the Sundance Channel with solid performances from its core cast and a compelling enough plot. The 3-disc set released through Anchor Bay is short on features, unfortunately but at a good price might be worth picking up.

The Lazarus Effect had some potential between a respectable cast who did a good job with what they were given and some nice production values, but the script came across as half assed and delved into horror clichés we’ve seen too many times before and done far better.

1990: The Bronx Warrior was never meant to be good and it certainly is not. It is also not a movie to watch alone as I suspect one would have a far better time mocking it, “MST3K” style. This release by Blue Underground is alright with so-so audio/video transfers and an OK selection of bonus features.

The Encore of Tony Duran, which has been around for a few years floating around the Interwebs, finally sees a DVD release and although not polished, still has some charm with its star, Gene Pietragallo. The DVD itself is a bit weak with so-so video/audio transfers but the video commentary makes for an interesting enough listen.

Review: Fight of the Living Dead DVD

I hate reality TV and I’m tired of zombie movies and Fight of the Living Dead manages to combine the two to make for an annoying series that I’m sure a certain segment will like, myself I won’t think about it ever again. The DVD released by Cinedigm is light on substantive features but I guess it’s better than nothing.

Run All Night isn’t great but a perfectly satisfactory and entertaining action/thriller flick. Liam Neeson does employ his “special set of skills” but unlike the Taken movies, his character does get more depth and actual emotion. The writing isn’t the best, in particular developing the plot, but this is at least worth a rental.

It’s not too hard to see why Survivor went direct-to-video and in spite of the best efforts of a (mostly) respectable cast and some decent direction from the director, the screenplay needed a few more passes to iron out the plot and, in particular, the characters who are laughably thinly written and just laughable all around. This movie is destined for the dump bin and with a few cuts, will air on Spike TV one day.
