“Nashville” is not my cup of tea when it comes to music as I’m not much of a country music fan, however, the drama is engrossing and the performances are well done headlined by Connie Britton who really shined on “Friday Night Lights” and continues to do so in this series. The 5-disc DVD set has solid audio and video but the features are lacking yet if you enjoy the show, its well worth picking up.

The Little Mermaid makes a triumphant debut with this “Diamond Edition” Blu-ray containing a fair amount of features and fantastic audio/video transfers making it the best this film has ever looked and sounded. The 3D transfer isn’t the best but is best described as adequate. The one issue with this release is the misplacement of one shot which you can check out via YouTube, having seen it here, it’s not terribly distracting though it was an unnecessary blunder by Disney.

I Spit on Your Grave 2 is, to say the least, a disturbing movie and like most sequels, the writers and director attempts to amp up the anguish to the next level which it mostly does. Personally, I’m not a fan of these types of movies, although I did give the 2010 remake a respectable 3/5 rating, but this is one tough movie to get through and being so dark, it’s also one I will never revisit… ever.

“2 Broke Girls”: The Complete Second Season is hardly the funniest show on television but it is perfectly at home on CBS alongside “The Big Bang Theory”, “Two and a Half Men” and “How I Met Your Mother”. I like Kat Dennings and she can be funny but the material she’s given is limited but for her alone, she’s worth keeping up with the series.

“Leverage” might not be remembered that well but I sure enjoyed the series despite some less than stellar episodes. Still, the cast shares wonderful chemistry and some of the season-long storylines were at least compelling. This final season, granted only 15 episodes, have some solid episodes and the series finale gives nice closure for the fans. The DVD doesn’t have a whole lot regarding features though having a commentary with each episode does provide insight from the creators and others.

The Frozen Ground excels in many areas from a welcomed subtle performance by Nicolas Cage, a mature turn for Vanessa Hudgens and John Cusack playing the thankless role as the creepy and thoroughly disturbing serial killer. However, for all the good acting by the main cast and beautiful, Oscar-worthy, cinematography, it never quite reaches its potential as a compelling true crime-drama despite all the good and, from what I could tell, keeping with some of the facts, though speculation was thrown in to help the dramatic elements. Even so, this is a good movie worth watching.

World War Z isn’t a bad movie, far from it, as it efficiently entertains from beginning to end though Brad Pitt more or less sleepwalks through his role. However, this film is the epitome of wasted opportunities as this could have been one of the best in the genre to come out but instead it’s just a safe movie with nothing discernibly memorable. The Blu-ray combo set released by Paramount provides excellent audio/video transfers but the features leave much to be desired.

Halloween is still one of the best horror movies with genuine scares and the introduction to one of the best villains in movie history. While the movie might be great, Anchor Bay continues to milk the franchise releasing multiple editions with some nice new features but failing to port over anything from the others. With a new transfer and an upgrade in audio, if the other features were included, this could have easily been an Ultimate Edition and instead it’s a nice release with two substantial new features.

“Arrow”: The Complete First Season is off to a good start and I can’t wait to see what the second season brings between the drama and new characters to help expand the universe even further. Amell seems to have been the perfect person to cast as Oliver Queen and the addition of Katie Cassidy and David Ramsey are both great supports in a series that is nicely established.

“Criminal Minds”: Season 8 isn’t bad with a few highlights throughout the year including a fun supervillain in the Replicator and Jeanne Tripplehorn’s first foray is semi-satisfying though not an equal replacement for Brewster and some of the stories are getting tiresome blending together like a Friday the 13th sequel. The DVD released by Paramount does offer a respectable amount of features and the audio/video transfers are pretty good.

Tad: The Lost Explorer is a harmless animated adventure the entire family can enjoy and the animation itself is fairly impressive especially for a studio outside of the big three or four (i.e. Disney, Fox, DreamWorks). The 3D BD/BD/DVD combo pack released by Vivendi Entertainment, in an exclusive distribution deal to Wal-Mart, doesn’t have any features but the video/audio transfers are nice.

this Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection box set is not terribly bad in spite of the lack of any new material, it pretty much matches the DVD set released by Paramount a few years back, and unrated cuts of Jason Lives. Another concern is the high retail price of $130 price tag (and $95 on Amazon at the time of this writing) and, to me, a fairer price to nab this set especially if you already the DVDs, would be around $70 (or $5.83/movie).

“The Vampire Diaries”: The Complete Fourth Season is, for a lack of a better term, a compelling soap opera guised as a vampire fantasy-drama. The core cast share great chemistry and this year fans of “Delena” (Damon & Elena) will rejoice. All in all, season four moves at a brisk pace even when the plots, and subplots, get kind of convoluted, though I expect it for television needing to fill 23-episodes.
