Well, the Final Season of “Chuck” is pretty much a bust. It went from MUST WATCH LIVE to, well, its Sunday and nothing to do, might as well catch up. While fans do get some closure, the finale is a slap in the face to those that watched all five seasons.

THE MOVIE – 2.0/5

“Chuck” is back for his final swan song and… no one really cares. Coming back only to pack on enough episodes for a (hopeful) syndication deal, Warner and NBC appeared to have slashed the budget as well as the cast. Don’t worry though, Subway™ can help out!

The Fifth Season picks up with the Intersect now in the head of Morgan Grimes. While he is not the worst character to have it, he obviously shows how little he cares. Chuck and Sarah are now billionaires who purchased the Buy More and now have their own secret spy agency. Bla bla bla…they can do what they want. In theory this sounds great, but as well all know, crazy hijinks ensue. Going back to Morgan… such bad choice. He’s simply not charismatic enough to carry the show himself, and it shows.

But the show must go on, and the writers took the show in several unexpected directions. Considering they knew this was the final Season, it’s a little weird to see them shake things up so much and not just keep the formula from the previous Seasons the same. Trying to alienate the 15 people still watching the show live just doesn’t make much sense.

Skipping through to the end of the Season we get a totally disappointing finale. Probably one of the worst I’ve seen and it really makes me mad for investing five years in the show. Without spoiling it, they pretty much try to reboot the show.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 4.0/5

All features presented in HD.

Commentary on the Episodes:
‘Chuck Versus Sarah’ and ‘Chuck Versus the Goodbye’ with Chris Fedak, Josh Schwartz, Zachary Levi and Joshua Gomez

Sandwiches and Superfans (10 Minutes) – Mostly self-poking, this delves into how the show was kept alive thanks to support from fans and… Subway.

Chuck Versus the Final Episodes (15 minutes) – A look at shooting the final episode of Chuck (and this time they knew it was final!)

“Chuck”: The Beginnings (5 Minutes) – A look back at one of the few shows to make it out of the 2007 WGA Writers strike (along with “Gossip Girl”… another Josh Schwartz show!)

Extended Cut of the Final Episode (additional 9 minutes)

Rounding out the Discs are Deleted Scenes (6 Minutes), Scoring the World of “Chuck” (6 Minutes), a few (fake) Buy More Commercials (2 Minutes), a look back at all five seasons in “Chuck” Through the Years (11 Minutes), and a look where the characters might go in “Chuck”: The Future, and a Gag Reel (4 Minutes).

A Ultra Violet Digital Copy code for the season is also included.

VIDEO – 3.0/5

“Chuck”: The Complete Fifth and Final Season is presented in 1.78:1 on 2 Discs. Like previous seasons, this show just isn’t very good looking in HD. It’s acceptable for the most part, but you would hardly know this is a Blu-ray. Below average is probably the best I could give it.

AUDIO – 4.0/5

Warner has included an English DTS MA 5.1 Track for this release. Lossless is nice, but there is not a whole lot going on most of the time. Sure, there are some explosions, gun fires etc, but it’s mostly dialogue in the highly budget-cut final season.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Well, the Final Season of “Chuck” is pretty much a bust. It went from MUST WATCH LIVE to, well, its Sunday and nothing to do, might as well catch up. While fans do get some closure, the finale is a slap in the face to those that watched all five seasons.
