This “Halloween Party DVD Pack” containing Scared Shrekless and Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space are both fun animated shorts for all ages. Not sure if they’ll become some sort of a yearly ritual viewing but both are worth checking out if you haven’t already. While the combined running time is under an hour, the set is prices around $15 and might be worth picking up especially if you’re a fan of either films.

THE MOVIE – 3.5/5
Scared Shrekless (2010)
Halloween is Shrek’s (MIKE MEYERS) favorite holiday, but instead of the usual tricks or treats, Shrek ups the ante and challenges the gang – including Donkey (DEAN EDWARDS) and Puss in Boots (ANTONIO BANDERAS) – to spend the night telling scary stories. The last one to be scared Shrekless, wins.
Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space (2009)
Susan (REESE WITHERSPOON), B.O.B. (SETH ROGEN), The Missing Link (WILL ARNETT), and Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. (HUGH LAURIE), are back as special operatives dispatched to investigate a mysterious alien presence on Halloween. As the night unravels the innocent-looking pumpkins are revealed for what they really are – mutant aliens! Luckily the Monsters are there to smash the mutants’ wicked scheme to take over Earth.
Both of these specials aired on NBC, one in ’09 and the other in ’10, before Halloween and featured many of the voice talents from the feature films. Having watched Shrek the Halls, I enjoyed these holiday specials as they’re a good and fun time and only last 25 minutes or so. Sure, the stories of course are weak but the humor is good for both kids and adults. The Monsters Vs. Aliens special, it finally made its way onto DVD after a couple of years with the only way to view it being on Torrent sites which, from what I read (seriously), the picture and audio were not the best.
In regards to the specials themselves, I have a preference toward Scared Shrekless because I’m far more familiar with the franchise than I am with Monsters Vs. Aliens, but even so, the latter is still funny. Same goes for the Shrek special and whether or not you’ve seen either of their theatrical film counterparts, both are enjoyable if not passable entertainment.
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.25/5
Thriller (6:08) – This is a parody of the classic Michael Jackson music video with Shrek characters.
Puss in Boots: “These Boots Are Made for Walking” (2:18) is the music video for the song combining footage from Shrek with behind-the-scenes footage of Antonio Banderas recording the song. I believe this was available on one of the DVD/BD releases.
Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space
Karaoke Music Party contains three short videos featuring characters dancing to songs with the lines going on screen for you to sing with.
Modern Monster Movie-Making (17:27) is a featurette taking a look at animated 3D.
Both DVDs contain previews – Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda 2
VIDEO – 3.5/5
Both Scared Shrekless and Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space are presented in their original 1.78 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio. Neither one is look particularly great but the colors are bright. Otherwise these are acceptable transfers.
AUDIO – 3.0/5
Each short comes with a standard Dolby Digital 5.1 track which sounds good enough, though there’s not a whole lot of depth to either one with a good portion coming out of the center and front speakers while the rears get scant use.
OVERALL – 3.0/5
Overall, this “Halloween Party DVD Pack” containing Scared Shrekless and Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space are both fun animated shorts for all ages. Not sure if they’ll become some sort of a yearly ritual viewing but both are worth checking out if you haven’t already. While the combined running time is under an hour, the set is prices around $15 (less in some Wal-Mart stores that I’ve been to) and might be worth picking up especially if you’re a fan of either films.
