THE MOVIE – 4/5

Outline (from the back cover): This season, the series goes back in history – from 4.5 billion years ago to today – peeling back layers of rock, filling up river canyons, parting the oceans, and leveling mountains and volcanoes to investigate the origins of some of the most well-known locations and geological phenomena in the world. With rocks as their clues and volcanoes, ice sheets and colliding continents as their suspects, scientists launch a forensic investigation that will help viewers visualize how the Earth has evolved and formed over millions of years.

This second season, much like the first, continues to explore all the fascinating formations and anomalies on Planet Earth breaking it down sediment by sediment that even the layman can understand and, in certain respects, appreciate. As I’ve stated in my season one review, I’m far more interested in outer space mysteries than those on Earth but this season there are more remarkable subjects such as The Grand Canyon, Mount St. Helens, Everest and Death Valley mixed in with the other moderate episodes which have value as well, though they didn’t capture my interest as much.

Here are the episodes which I have denoted my favorites with an asterisk:
01. The Grand Canyon*
02. Vesuvius
03. Birth of the Earth
04. Sahara
05. Yosemite
06. The Rockies
07. The Ring of Fire*
08. Everest*
09. Death Valley*
10. Mount St. Helens*
11. Earth’s Deadliest Eruption
12. America’s Ice Age
13. America’s Gold

If you’ve enjoyed the season one release, there’s no reason not to give the second season a try as you’ll learn more about Earth and after watching, I’m positive you will be the life of any party!

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0/5

No features have been included.

VIDEO – 4/5

The 1.78 aspect ratio video looks good overall with some minor flaws with minute amounts of pixilation. Otherwise, the colors and detail levels are decent enough and on par with what its original airing on the HISTORY Channel.

AUDIO – 3.5/5

All I can say about the DTS-HD Master Audio stereo track gets the job done. There’s a lot of dialogue from the interviews with experts which sound, obviously, flat and some of the basic music lacks depth as one would expect from a 2.0 track. It could’ve been better but given the show, I can’t complain.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

If you’ve enjoyed the season one release, there’s no reason not to give the second season a try as you’ll learn more about Earth and after watching, I’m positive you will be the life of any party! Did I say that already?
